When I sat down to write a book about my life, I sat down and brainstormed. I plan quite a bit about what I wanted to write, and how I wanted to write it. I didn’t write whatever down for a few days, I just let it stew in my brain.

Then I sat down to get a wee more organized. Ran down to Walgreens, and picked up a few packages of 3×5 index cards. I sat down for a few hours, and poured out in very broad terms my topics. For instance one of my index cards simply said. Dog bite-hospital-pee.

After a while, I would get more detailed. I would write a wee more ideas free form on the card about the topic. Just some memory points, whatever that won’t fit on one side of the card was too much and probably deserved a cut off topic.

Once you have a bunch of ideas jotted out. Now it’s time to create them. Put them in the order you’d like to write in. Get rid of some of the cards you no longer want(or rather put them aside, you never know when you might want that card again).

Now you’re ready to put the pen to the paper. What I found is that the beginning is the Hardest part of the book to get right. I might rewrite my chance paragraph and chance lesson dozens of times. So, I want to whip straight through it the first time through, no thinking, just blaze away, I know I’m going to rewrite it numerous times anyway, and I would hate to get held up on this part.

If you’re going to get the book done, you have to have a schedule. I knew I wanted to write for two hours a day, and cease my first draft in six weeks. Then I’d spend the next 3 weeks doing revisions. I’d let some friends read it, give me broad impressions, then revise some more. Put together your own game plan.

It took me a month longer than I expected, but I got it done. I like it, it’s not going to get me any literary awards anytime soon. But, it’s something very special that I can pass down to my children. The biggest key to success in writing your own book is to get started. eventually you have to write. Direct comparisons – fellowships in the same manufactures with the same resources and opportunities as the good-to-great group but showed no leap in performance, which were: Upjohn, Silo, Great Western, Warner-Lambert, Scott Paper, A&P, Bethlehem Steel, Rj Reynolds, Addressograph, Eckerd, and Bank of America.

b. Unsustained comparisons – fellowships that made a short-term shift from good to great but failed to voice the trajectory, namely: Burroughs, Chrysler, Harris, Hasbro, Rubbermaid, and Teledyne

Wisdom In A Nutshell:

a. Ten out of eleven good-to-great company leaders or Ceos came from the inside. They were not outsiders hired in to ‘save’ the company. They were whether citizen who worked many years at the company or were members of the house that owned the company.

b. Strategy per se did not cut off the good to great fellowships from the comparison groups.

c. Good-to-great fellowships focus on what Not to do and what they should stop doing.

d. Technology has nothing to do with the transformation from good to great. It may help accelerate it but is not the cause of it.

e. Mergers and acquisitions do not cause a transformation from good to great.

f. Good-to-great fellowships paid wee attention to managing convert or motivating people. Under the right conditions, these problems simply go away.

g. Good-to-great transformations did not need any new name, tagline, or activate program. The leap was in the doing results, not a revolutionary process.

h. Greatness is not a function of circumstance; it is clearly a matter of conscious choice.

i. Every good-to-great company had “Level 5” leadership during pivotal transition years, where Level 1 is a extremely Capable Individual, Level 2 is a Contributing Team Member, Level 3 is the Competent Manager, Level 4 is an effective Leader, and Level 5 is the menagerial who builds enduring greatness through a paradoxical blend of personal humility and pro will.

j. Level 5 leaders display a compelling modesty, are self-effacing and understated. In contrast, two thirds of the comparison fellowships had leaders with immense personal egos that contributed to the demise or prolonged mediocrity of the company.

n. The research team was not seeing for Level 5 leadership, but the data was phenomenal and convincing. The Level 5 discovery is an empirical, not ideological, finding.

o. Before answering the “what” questions of foresight and strategy, ask first “who” are the right citizen for the team.

p. Comparison fellowships used layoffs much more than the good-to-great companies. Although rigorous, the good-to-great fellowships were never ruthless and did not rely on layoffs or restructuring to heighten performance.

q. Good-to-great administration teams consist of citizen who consider vigorously in hunt of the best answers, yet who unify behind decisions, regardless of parochial interests.

r. There is no link between menagerial recompense and the shift from good to great. The purpose of recompense is not to ‘motivate’ the right behaviors from the wrong people, but to get and keep the right citizen in the first place.

s. The old adage “People are your most foremost asset” is wrong. citizen are not your most foremost asset. The right citizen are.

t. whether someone is the right someone has more to do with character and innate capabilities than definite knowledge, skills or experience.

u. The Hedgehog thought is a thought that flows from the deep insight about the intersection of the following three circles:

1.What you can be best in the world at, realistically, and what you cannot be best in the world at

2.What drives your economic engine

3.What you are deeply passionate about

v. discover your core values and purpose beyond simply making money and merge this with the dynamic of sustain the core values – stimulate progress, as shown for example by Disney. They have evolved from making short animated films, to highlight distance films, to theme parks, to cruises, but their core values of providing happiness to young and old, and not succumbing to cynicism remains strong.

w. Enduring great fellowships don’t exist merely to deliver returns to shareholders. In a truly great company, profits and cash flow are literally necessary for life, but they are not the very point of life.

“What To Say When You Talk To Yourself” by Shad Helmstetter, Ph.D. Is an excellent book on the power of the mind. It is someone else great book on the subject.

Allow me to share a personal story about my own touch with this book.

What To Say When You Talk To Yourself – Book recite

It came into my life in about 2005. A time when I first began taking my network marketing company seriously. A side-line friend and I were talking, well, I was griping and complaining, about the setbacks I was experiencing with regard to forward request for retrial in my business.

This friend started pointing out the power of my own words – the power my own words had upon myself!

The teaching of my parents came to my mind…the data they shared with me growing up…and I began asking questions. He just said, “What To Say When You Talk To Yourself, by Shad Helmstetter.

He said that he had picked up the book in a thrift store (for 25 cents!) and he ran out to his car and gave me his copy. I at once devoured it. I just couldn’t put it down until I had imprinted it on my brain. I read it cover to cover.

Wanna know what I learned? I learned that it is foremost to know the power of what you Say has on your quality to reach your goals.

I also learned the point of subconscious programming. Brainwashing? Well, sort of. But think about it more like Brain Washing…you know, clearing out the garbage and manufacture room for best stuff.

Is there any conference over the fact that whether you believe you can or believe you cannot you are indeed correct?

I hope not. I live my life by that motto. It has proven to be true time after time. It is foremost to know that your subconscious mind is Not in control. It is your known mind that runs the show. If you don’t control what goes into subconscious mind it will believe anything seeps into it.

Let’s say you are watching a rather violent and illustrated movie. If you don’t Tell yourself that it is just play acting, pretending, and the actor will get up from the scene and walk away to be in someone else movie someone else day then your subconscious mind will believe that what you are finding is Real.

Shad Helmstetter, in “What To Say When You Talk To Yourself,” tells about his experiences with helping habitancy who want to stop smoking. He taught them to speak to themselves with great conviction thus reprogramming their minds to believe that they are no longer smokers. He continues in great information about success story after success story from his work.

Since reading “What To Say When You Talk To Yourself” I have had other data come into my life that both confirms and builds upon the concepts that I learned from this mind-altering book. I highly propose this one.

I hope you will take it to heart that you can convert the circumstances in your own life by changing your mind. Talk yourself into success!

I’m not saying that it is All in your head. But I am saying that when you teach your mind to function on a higher level ideas will come to you from all (and unexpected) directions. I hope you act upon them because it is simply the law of attraction. *wink*

I literally enjoyed reading this book. I found it spellbinding to read about some of the behind-the-scenes workings of how many of my favorite books ultimately arrived at their title. It was very amusing to see the back-and-forth struggles between editors and authors over a book’s title. Although not a how-to book, this small short amusing book will literally request for retrial to every writer and editor.

The book discusses over 100 distinct preponderant books of fiction, such as “Jaws”, “The Great Gatsby”, “The Maltese Falcon”, and “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”, and how their title came to be. One of my favorites is the story of “Gone With The Wind”. It was first called “Pansy”, then changed to “Tote the Weary Load”, and then to “Tomorrow is someone else Day”.

Bernard’s book also has great advice, sprinkled throughout the book, from authors and editors about selecting a title. One of my favorites is a quote by Walker Percy: “A good title should be like a good metaphor; it should intrigue without being too baffling or too obvious.”

Some historic literary facts are also given for many of the titles. One of my favorites is the story about Lewis Carroll being the first one to advise to his publisher that the dust jacket carry the title of the book. Carroll’s “The Hunting of the Snark” became the first book to be published with a printed jacket.

In Bernard’s Introduction, he says that this book is an “… An anecdotal account of how some of the most familiar book and play titles come to be. It is not meant to be a full, compendium of every catchy title, but rather a lighthearted look at a struggle that has bedeviled writers for centuries.”

As an author and publisher I can literally appreciate how prominent a title can be to the financial success of a book. Nowadays, a title must not only be catchy, but also be key-word-rich and search-engine-friendly, if you have any hope of it being found on the internet. The allowable title is important if you want your publication to stand out from the huge amount of publications that are published every day. If you are an author or publisher, you will literally know that a good title is an important part of a prosperous marketing plan for any publication. In Bernard’s book you will read about very preponderant authors going through the same (but on a much less sophisticated level) agonizing process that we authors and publishers go through today. Nowadays, developing the best title is even more prominent than it was when most of the books discussed in Bernard’s book were written. But it was still very spellbinding to see how these preponderant authors and big-name publishers dealt with this prominent process.

Book Club Questions

Different kinds of population with very diverse opinions meet to discuss books in a book club, and if there are no guided questions to funnel these discussions, the results can be chaotic. The participants may feel shortchanged, some may grow uninterested, and some may even end up fighting!

If you are a book club moderator or a very active participant, it is therefore very important to have a set of questions to guide the flow of conference and make sure that it achieves its purposes – to dissect the literature into relevant pieces, and to make sure that participants go home more analytical and inspired. Here are some things to remember when formulating book club questions.

Book Club Questions

Focus on character analysis. Most books are not about the plot, but about the people. Each one of the participants can probably impart to one or more of the characters in the book, so it’s a good idea to ask every person who they can impart to and why.

Relate the theme and conflicts of the book to real life. Literature is only relevant when it contributes something to the ‘now.’ Ask the participants how they associate the conflicts in the book to day-to-day struggles. Ask them how they feel about the resolutions and conclusions, and what definite elements of the book are especially relevant to the patterns of contemporary human interaction.

Always ask for suggestions. Avid book readers probably have alternative suggestions to every book they have ever read – and a book club is a good place to bring all of them out. Ask the members how they think the novel could have been best – how they would write the ending, for example, or how they would change any character or setting.

Before giving a book assignment, it is a good idea to ask the participants to feature parts of the book they think should be talked about, so they can easily refer to them during the discussion.

During the meeting itself, give every person a occasion to speak. Politely interrupt a ‘monopolizing’ member by offering him or her food or drinks, or segueing into an additional one examine and then asking someone else to sass it.

What Makes A Good Children’s Book?

When you’re selecting a good children’s book you should look for a number of things. Is the story tantalizing to the child? Does it use a lot of sight words and repetition? Are the pictures helpful to the child to understand the words? Is it age standard for the child? Is it teaching them good values?

Let’s look at each of the qualities and see why they are important.

Is the story tantalizing to the child?

With young children you need to capture their concentration and keep it. Parents know that young children will commonly flit from one thing to an additional one after 5 to 10 minutes. If they have something that truly grabs their concentration they will stick with it longer. So if the story in the book you’ve premium captures their concentration they will sit with you straight through the whole story and often times want you to read it again and again.

Does the children’s book use a lot of sight words?

Sight words are the straightforward words that make up 50 to 70 percent of any general text. You may have also heard of them as Doulch words. Many of these words you can’t sound out and need to be learned by sight. Words such as are, and, an, at, the, that, did, do, green, just, must, make and if are all sight words. There are about 220 of them along with about 95 nouns. If the children’s book has many of these words and uses them in repetition it will help your child identify them faster and read better.

Pictures in a good children’s book help the child understand the words.

If the character is talking about red strawberries there should be red strawberries pictured. It’s teaching them about a sight word “red” and it’s showing them the color and what a strawberry is. By associating the word to the photo they learn the word so the next time they see the word they see the photo in their mind.

Is the children’s book age appropriate?

Parents know their children. Some are more industrialized than others when it comes to reading so selecting age standard books can sometimes be tricky. If you have a 3 year old child that’s already picking up words from stories you might want to reconsider buying books that are a wee above them say in the 4 to 5 year old range. What’s prominent is you want to keep them interested. If it’s too hard for them to understand they won’t want to read the story. At the same time you want to challenge them.

A good children’s book will teach values and public interactions.

You want to teach them about things like saying please and thank you or how prominent it is to help your friends and population around them. Look for children’s books that have messages like that in them.

Taking the time to find a good children’s book can be very useful for your child. Teaching them words and public graces at a young age when their minds are soaking up all that’s put in front of them can help them immensely in later years. Help them compose skills early that they’ll need and use for the rest of their life.
